The day after the tense parting with his son and son-in-law, Spenser waited in his closet-chapel and prayed - that he was making the right decision, that his plan could be implemented without complications, that his son would convince his brother -in-law to assist in the escape. He desperately needed the help of someone who knew his way around the government and especially the infrastructure of the city and how to escape it. Being unchipped was a huge disadvantage in such a venture, any venture, really, like being blindfolded in a dark room where everyone else had a flashlight. He opted a long time ago to not get chipped. He had never been convinced that being chipped was worth the degree of personal freedom he would have to give up. He knew it frustrated his wife and children sometimes, but he was determined he would not give up his autonomy. He had been born a free man, and he intended to stay a free man.
